Shrewsbury plays mah-jong and walks the river

The free Mah-jong session at Shrewsbury Library on Castle Gates, Wednesdays at 10am, is a gentle way to make friends in Shrewsbury. Writers can join the Shrewsbury writers’ lab every other Tuesday evening, and on Saturdays Shrewsbury parkrun loops the Quarry along the River Severn. What is the Dingle in the Quarry?

The Dingle is a sunken garden about 110 metres long inside the Quarry, Shrewsbury’s riverside park. It has an 1889 Coalbrookdale fountain and the Grade II listed statue of Sabrina, and the gardener Percy Thrower replanted the Quarry’s lime avenues around 1950. It is lovely for a slow walk together.

When is Shrewsbury Market Hall open?

Shrewsbury Market Hall on Claremont Street trades Tuesday to Saturday, 8am until 4pm, with no market on Sunday or Monday. Its 1965 building has a 240-foot clock tower, and the traders include food stalls, makers and, since October 2026, a permanent florist’s stall. A Shrewsbury favourite for coffee.

Can you parkrun in the middle of Shrewsbury?

Yes, Shrewsbury parkrun takes place in the Quarry in the town centre, on tarmac paths through the tree avenues and along the River Severn. Close to 600 finishers took part one recent week, so Shrewsbury parkrun is a busy, sociable start to the weekend. Haughmond Hill parkrun is nearby too.

Shrewsbury women: is there a simple way to meet up?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, lets Shrewsbury women discover others in their area, from Monkmoor to Copthorne, and build up to a meeting through messages. A walk round the Quarry or a coffee at the Market Hall makes a relaxed first meeting.

Shrewsbury, a river town where many live alone

Shrewsbury sits in a loop of the River Severn, with the Quarry park on its banks and the 1965 Market Hall clock tower on the skyline. A third of the households in the 13 town wards consist of a single person, and 36% of homes are mortgage-free, each above the West Midlands. Anyone who lives on their own or moved here for work may find a whole weekend passes without a proper conversation.

Living solo can feel lonely, yet Shrewsbury has easy places to start. In the town centre, the Quarry’s lime avenues lead to the Dingle, a sunken garden with a statue of Sabrina, in a park replanted by Percy Thrower, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery has free admission, and the Market Hall added a new florist’s stall in October 2026 and stays open late on Halloween. Theatre Severn and the riverside walks give you more to share. Places to start in Shrewsbury:
