Brierley Hill gets together over a cuppa

The free Craft and a Cuppa morning at Brierley Hill Library, every Tuesday from 10am to noon, is a gentle way to make friends in Brierley Hill. On Thursday afternoons the same library on the High Street runs a Coffee Afternoon, and on Saturdays the Dudley parkrun loops the track and towpaths at The Dell. Gofrendly helps Brierley Hill women find someone to go along with.

Where does Dudley parkrun start?

Dudley parkrun starts at The Dell Stadium on Bryce Road, on the Pensnett side of Brierley Hill. The 5k mixes the running track with tarmac paths, canal towpaths and trails, and the team heads for a post-run coffee at a local café every week, newcomers included.

What is Saltwells Nature Reserve like?

Saltwells National Nature Reserve covers 247 acres on the Quarry Bank edge of Brierley Hill, with woodland that is partly ancient and famous for bluebells, the Doultons Clay Pit geology site and the Dudley No 2 Canal running through. There is no café on site, but the Saltwells Inn stands beside the car park.

What is on at the Civic in Brierley Hill?

The Civic on Bank Street is Brierley Hill’s old civic hall, saved and run by the charity Dudley CVS since 2015. Its programme mixes tribute acts, comedy, bingo, daytime discos and musical theatre, so most weeks bring something worth booking two tickets for.

How do Brierley Hill women connect with others locally?

Gofrendly is a women-only friendship app on which Brierley Hill women can spot others nearby, from Brockmoor to Quarry Bank, and suggest meeting up after a few messages back and forth. A towpath walk down the Delph Locks is a relaxed place to begin.

Brierley Hill, a Black Country town of canals and steel

Brierley Hill grew up on glass, iron and the Round Oak Steelworks, whose site is now the Waterfront, next to the Merry Hill shopping centre. In the town and the neighbouring Brockmoor and Pensnett ward, nearly one household in three rents from a social landlord and roughly 15% of households are an unmarried couple sharing a home, each well above the West Midlands. For anyone new to a street, a job or a relationship, a regular weekly outing is worth more than a one-off night out.

A lonely spell can follow a move, yet the town has plenty of free starting points. The library reopened in December 2023 after a £670,000 refurbishment with new community rooms, the Civic on Bank Street has been run by the charity Dudley CVS since 2015, and the wardens at Buckpool and Fens Pools lead volunteer work around the largest stretch of open water in Dudley. Places to start:

1
Brierley Hill Library at 122 High Street.
2
The Market Hall on the High Street, trading Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
3
The Dell Stadium on Bryce Road, Pensnett.
4
Saltwells National Nature Reserve off Coppice Lane.
5
The Delph Locks flight between the Dudley and Stourbridge canals.
LOCAL TIP
Go to Craft and a Cuppa three Tuesdays running and the faces round the table stop being strangers.
