Does Turner Contemporary in Margate charge for entry?

No, entry to Turner Contemporary on the Margate seafront costs nothing. The gallery opens Tuesday to Sunday and on bank holidays from 11am to 5pm, and in autumn 2026 it is showing a Sophie Calle exhibition that runs until 24 January 2027.

When will Margate Winter Gardens reopen?

Margate Winter Gardens has been closed since August 2022. Westwood One, which also runs the Granville Theatre in Ramsgate, holds a 999-year lease, and the first phase, the Main Hall, is due to reopen on 14 March 2027 with an £8m budget behind the work.

Does Margate parkrun still run at Palm Bay?

Yes. Margate parkrun takes place at Palm Bay in Cliftonville every Saturday at 9am, and more than 200 people finished on 17 October 2026. Walkers and volunteers are welcome too, so any pace works for women in Margate and Cliftonville.

Where do Margate women go to meet new people?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, helps women in Margate and Cliftonville see who lives close by and suggest a meet-up. A walk along the bay or a coffee after Turner Contemporary makes a relaxed opener for a lazy weekend afternoon.

Margate, a seaside town in revival

Margate curves round its sandy bay on the Isle of Thanet, from its Old Town and harbour to the Victorian streets of Cliftonville and Palm Bay. Across seven Margate wards, 34% of homes are privately let and lone-parent families make up about 13% of households, each well above the regional picture. Because so many neighbours rent, and tenancies come and go, a standing weekly plan is how a nodding acquaintance turns into a friend.

Out of season, Margate can feel lonely once the crowds thin and the seafront cafés quieten for winter. Turner Contemporary has The Drawing Studio alongside exhibitions such as Sophie Calle’s, Hartsdown Leisure Centre offers a swimming pool and sports hall, and the Winter Gardens are due to reopen on 14 March 2027 after closing in 2022. Theatre Royal Margate, built in 1787, gained planning permission for its refurbishment in August 2026. A few places to begin:

1
Turner Contemporary on the seafront, open Tuesday to Sunday.
2
Palm Bay in Cliftonville, home of Margate parkrun.
3
Margate Library at Thanet Gateway Plus on Cecil Street.
4
