This is a real friendship story about Amanda and six other women from Gofrendly, the women-only friendship app, who turned a lonely New Year’s Eve into a night to remember. Here’s how it happened, in Amanda’s own words.
Key Takeaways
- Amanda and six other Gofrendly members were all planning to spend New Year’s Eve at home on their own.
- Instead they had a dinner party, with a 90s playlist, Macarena dancing and plenty of laughter.
- Since then they have been skating, had sauna nights and shared even more dinners.
A Real Friendship Story That Started on New Year’s Eve
“So it was New Year’s Eve and we were all planning on just having a chill night at home, by ourselves, in our pajamas. But then Gofrendly came into the picture and our evening ended up being anything but chill,” Amanda says.
“We had a dinner party at one of our houses and it was so much fun – lots of laughter, a 90s playlist (obviously), Macarena dancing, and bottles popping everywhere.”
“But then Gofrendly came into the picture and our evening ended up being anything but chill.”

New Year’s Eve wasn’t the end of it.
“And since then, we’ve hung out a bunch more – gone skating, had sauna nights, and even more dinners. It’s been great!”
You’re Not the Only One Feeling Lonely at New Year
Amanda’s group had each planned to spend New Year’s Eve alone, and feeling lonely at that time of year is common. In the Office for National Statistics survey covering 13 December 2023 to 1 January 2024, the weeks around Christmas and New Year, around a quarter of adults in Great Britain said they felt lonely always, often or some of the time.
27%of adults in Great Britain said they felt lonely always, often or some of the time in the ONS survey covering 13 December 2023 to 1 January 2024.

What Amanda’s Story Can Teach You
Their story is a reminder of a few simple things.
- One plan is enough to start. Seven women who had each planned a night in ended up at the same dinner party instead.
- Friendship can be a group thing. Amanda’s story isn’t about one new friend but seven women at one dinner party.
- Keep the plans coming. Skating, sauna nights and more dinners followed, and that’s how one night turned into more.
