Folkestone stretches along the Kent coast from Cheriton to the old harbour, where the last cross-Channel ferry left in 2001 and the Harbour Arm is now a public promenade. Across six town wards, 36% of Folkestone households are people living solo and nearly a third of homes are let privately, each well above the South East. Because so many neighbours are renting or living on their own, a standing weekly arrangement, the same class or the same Saturday run, is how strangers become friends.
A seaside flat gets lonely fast after the summer crowds leave. Quarterhouse in the Creative Quarter has run drop-in Tuesday evening meditation sessions, Kingsnorth Gardens near Folkestone Central station relies on volunteers from the Friends of Kingsnorth Gardens, and Radnor Park has its own tea room. The pool at Folkestone Sports Centre closed in 2024, and a funded renovation was due to bring swimming back in 2026, and the Harbour Arm stays busy at weekends into October. Places to start:
