Ashford brings people to the market

The town market on Lower High Street, open three days a week, is an everyday way to make friends in Ashford. Victoria Park has a fresh Green Flag for 2026, won with help from its Friends group, the Food with Friends Cafe sits inside Ashford Gateway Plus on Church Road, and Revelation stages music in a restored parish church. Ashford women can also look one another up on Gofrendly.

Ashford, Kent: what newcomers and locals ask

Which days does Ashford Town Market trade?

Ashford Town Market sets up on Lower High Street three days a week, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, with a few traders on Thursdays too. The United Makers of Kent food and creative market joins it on the first Saturday of the month, which makes Ashford town centre busiest on those mornings.

Can you volunteer outdoors in Ashford?

Yes. Kent Wildlife Trust runs conservation tasks at Conningbrook Lakes Country Park, and the Friends of Victoria Park help look after a park that collected a second consecutive Green Flag this year. Both put Ashford volunteers side by side with the same people regularly.

What is Revelation in Ashford?

Revelation is an arts and music venue inside the restored St Mary the Virgin parish church in The Churchyard, Ashford. It hosts music, theatre, talks and films, with a licensed bar, so arriving early gives you time to talk to the Ashford regulars before the show.

How do Ashford women find friends in their own neighbourhood?

Gofrendly is a women-only friendship app where Ashford women, from the town centre to Kennington or Willesborough, can see who lives near them and send a message to suggest meeting. A loop of Victoria Park and a coffee afterwards makes an easy first plan.

Where Ashford gets together

Ashford grew as a market town, and its market charter goes back to Henry III in 1243. Today the railway brings commuters and the town has spread out in every direction, and the 21 town wards hold a young population: children under 16 are about a fifth of residents and one home in eight has a single parent at its head, with children young or grown, above the South East on both counts. When the school run shapes the week, one regular outing that belongs to you alone makes friendships far easier to build.

A busy family house can still feel lonely once the children are in bed. The Stour Centre by Ashford International has the pool, Conningbrook Lakes Country Park runs Kent Wildlife Trust conservation tasks, and the borough museum in the churchyard opens from April to October. The council has set aside £1m to repair the Hubert Fountain in Victoria Park, the tank and Woodchurch Windmill. Some places to begin:

1
Victoria Park, a Green Flag park cared for partly by its Friends group.
2
Conningbrook Lakes Country Park, reached through the Julie Rose Stadium.
3
Revelation, the music venue inside St Mary the Virgin church.
4
Ashford Gateway Plus on Church Road, with the library.
5
The town market on Lower High Street.
LOCAL TIP
Go back to the same Ashford market stall each Saturday and let the small talk grow.
