Sharrow is a short walk from everything

The quickest way to make friends in Sharrow is to join something that meets on a fixed day. Highfield Library on London Road hosts a reading group every first Monday, and Sheffield General Cemetery makes a peaceful walk on any day of the week. On Saturday mornings Endcliffe parkrun is under 2km away, two laps of Endcliffe Park. Through Gofrendly, a Sharrow woman to come with you is never far away.

Is the cemetery in Sharrow free to visit?

Yes. Sheffield General Cemetery, in the Sharrow ward, costs nothing to enter and stays open 24 hours a day, all year. More than 86,000 people are buried there, and it marked its 190th birthday in May 2026 with tours, a mindfulness walk and a chapel exhibition.

What are the library hours near Sharrow?

Highfield Library and Children’s Centre on London Road, the library nearest Sharrow, is open 10am to 5pm Monday to Wednesday and on Fridays, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, closing for lunch from 1pm to 2pm. It is shut on Thursdays; phone 0114 203 7204.

What is changing at the park in Sharrow?

Mount Pleasant Park in Sharrow, a 3-hectare park created in 1983 on cleared housing land, is getting a £430,000 upgrade: a scoot and learn-to-ride track, a redesigned inclusive play area and a resurfaced games court. Work was scheduled to start in May 2026 and is now due to finish in late November.

Where can women make friends in Sharrow?

A women-only friendship app like Gofrendly helps here, since it shows which Sharrow women live near you and lets you message them directly. Pick a first meeting with a natural end point, such as the reading group at Highfield Library, so nobody has to plan a whole afternoon.

Sharrow’s mix of students, renters and neighbours

Sharrow has a young, renting crowd. Almost one in five residents in the ward is 18 to 24, nearly four in ten households rent privately, and single-person homes account for more than a third. For anyone who has only just moved in, that mix helps, because a group with plenty of newcomers is easier to walk into. Friendships still need a fixed point, though: a group or a run that will still be there next month, whoever has moved out.

A rented room above a busy road can feel lonely to begin with, but green space is close by. Mount Pleasant Park hosted the Sharrow Festival again on 4 July 2026 after a year off, and the Friends of Mount Pleasant Park meet every month or so at the community centre in the old Sharrow Junior School. The Samuel Worth Chapel in the General Cemetery is used for exhibitions, and Millhouses parkrun is a flat, all-tarmac course a few kilometres away. Places worth knowing:

1
The first-Monday reading group at Highfield Library.
2
A slow walk round the General Cemetery, opened in 1836.
3
Endcliffe parkrun, past the Mi Amigo memorial.
4
Millhouses parkrun, almost three flat laps on tarmac.
5
The Sharrow Festival, back in Mount Pleasant Park in 2026.
LOCAL TIP
Choose one first Monday and one Saturday run, and by the third month you will be the one welcoming newcomers.
