Sale grew as a Victorian commuter town on the Bridgewater Canal, south of Manchester, with Ashton upon Mersey, Brooklands and Sale Moor among its neighbourhoods. In its five wards, married parents raising children account for nearly 21% of households and children up to 15 about 21% of residents, well beyond the North West shares. Parents at nursery gates, swimming lessons and Saturday parkrun can quickly become familiar faces.
Even with a full family life, days at home with small children can be lonely. Waterside Arts has the ‘Sup café and creative groups including a Creatives Brunch Club, Walton Park has a 2026 Green Flag award, a miniature railway and a Friends group, and Worthington Park has one too. Sale Water Park, on the eastern edge, has paths beside the lake and the Mersey, and the Bridgewater Canal towpath links Sale with Altrincham and Stretford. Sale Leisure Centre stays open while Trafford plans a redevelopment. Places worth a visit:
