Prescot is a compact hilltop town in Knowsley, once known for watch-making, with a cobbled centre, the parish church of St Mary and the timber Cockpit theatre at Shakespeare North. In its two wards, close to 14% of households are cohabiting couples and a similar share are lone parents, both a little above the North West. Living with a new partner or bringing up children alone, having one or two regular places where people know your face makes all the difference.
Moving to a small town can feel lonely at first. Prescot Library and Museum share The Prescot Centre, with a Book Lovers reading group and a creative writing group, Eaton Street Park has tea in the park on Sunday afternoons outside winter, and Knowsley parkrun runs a couple of kilometres away in Whiston. The town has no pool, so swimmers head to Huyton. The museum tells the story of Knowsley’s people, places and businesses. Where to start:
