Make Friends in Bootle, along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

More than a third of central Bootle homes are social housing, almost twice the North West figure, so neighbours often know the same streets well.

Bootle Library hosts two writing groups

Writers Bloc meets at Bootle Library on Stanley Road every other Wednesday, a creative way to make friends in Bootle, and a second writers’ group gathers there on alternate Thursdays. Derby Park has the largest play area in Sefton, and Bootle Leisure Centre offers both a 25-metre and a leisure pool. Gofrendly is one more route for Bootle women looking for company.

What is happening to the Strand in Bootle?

Sefton Council is transforming Bootle Strand with a £20 million government grant, and demolition along the Palatine was completed in October 2025. Businesses in and around the Strand stay open throughout the works, so Bootle shoppers can still meet there for a coffee.

Is there a parkrun close to Bootle?

Bootle does not host a parkrun. Crosby parkrun starts at Crosby Leisure Centre on Mariners Road, roughly five kilometres up the coast, at 9am each Saturday, and walkers are welcome. Going with a neighbour from Bootle makes the journey part of the morning.

Raising children alone in Bootle: where can you find friends?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, makes it simple for Bootle mums bringing up children alone to spot women nearby and say hello. An afternoon at the Derby Park play area or a walk along the canal is a simple plan for meeting.

Bootle, a dockside town in Sefton

Bootle grew up around the northern docks of the Mersey, with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal running through it and its civic buildings on Oriel Road. In the three wards of Derby, Linacre and Netherton and Orrell, about 34% of homes are social housing and close to 19% of households are one-parent families, both far above the figures for the region. If school, shifts and children take up your days, a small group that meets at the same time each fortnight can bring new company.

Raising a family on your own can be lonely. Bootle Library runs Shared Reading on alternate Friday mornings and a garden group from spring to autumn, and the Strand is being transformed while its businesses stay open. Derby Park, with the largest play area in Sefton, is where many local parents cross paths. Crosby parkrun is a short trip north on Saturdays. Where to begin:

1
Bootle Library on Stanley Road, with two writing groups each fortnight.
2
Derby Park, with Sefton’s largest play area and a Friends group.
3
Bootle Leisure Centre: 25-metre and leisure pools.
4
