Sutton is a suburban borough of family homes and quiet streets. Almost two thirds of households own their home, a fifth of residents are under 15, and places like Carshalton, Cheam and Wallington still have the feel of separate villages with their own high streets. Sutton town centre is the busiest part, with the shops, the central library and the main station.
With so many families, social life often centres on schools, clubs and weekend sport. If that is your world, use it: suggest a coffee to the parent you always see at the side of the pitch. If it is not, local volunteering, walking groups and classes are good ways in, because they mix people of all ages. Sutton can feel lonely if your friends are spread across London, so look for something within a short walk and keep it going for a few months. Places to become a regular:
