Bromley is part London suburb, part countryside, with Biggin Hill and Downe feeling a world away from Penge and Anerley. Around seven in ten households own their home and more than one in six residents is 65 or over, so the borough is settled and many social circles are well established. That is good news: clubs, choirs and walking groups here tend to have been running for years and welcome new members.

Beckenham and Bromley town have the busiest high streets, Orpington and Petts Wood have their own community feel, and Chislehurst and Keston are greener still. A big borough can feel lonely when friends live at the far end of it, so one regular plan near home is worth more than several far away. Trains run in every direction, which is handy for work but means your social life is best kept close to your own station. Places with plenty of regulars:
