Brierley Hill grew up on glass, iron and the Round Oak Steelworks, whose site is now the Waterfront, next to the Merry Hill shopping centre. In the town and the neighbouring Brockmoor and Pensnett ward, nearly one household in three rents from a social landlord and roughly 15% of households are an unmarried couple sharing a home, each well above the West Midlands. For anyone new to a street, a job or a relationship, a regular weekly outing is worth more than a one-off night out.
A lonely spell can follow a move, yet the town has plenty of free starting points. The library reopened in December 2023 after a £670,000 refurbishment with new community rooms, the Civic on Bank Street has been run by the charity Dudley CVS since 2015, and the wardens at Buckpool and Fens Pools lead volunteer work around the largest stretch of open water in Dudley.
