Friendship After 40 in the South East: Where to Begin

Commuting, school runs and long working weeks can leave the South East strangely quiet for women in their 40s. Here is how to bring people back into the week.

THE REGION

The Commuter Years, Revisited

The South East counted over 658,000 women aged 40 to 49 in the mid-2025 ONS estimates. At 13.2% of residents, that age group is a bigger share here than in any English region except London. If you spend a large part of the week somewhere else, on a train to work, in a car on the school run or in a home office that could be anywhere, a town like Guildford, Reading or Maidstone can feel busy at weekends and oddly empty in between. If that sounds familiar, look for things that happen where you sleep rather than where you work, such as an evening class, a walking group or a Saturday morning club. The easiest way to make friends after 40 in the South East is with people you can see without a timetable.
