Bridgwater stands on the River Parrett, and its Guy Fawkes Carnival, which bills itself as the oldest in the UK, lights up the streets each November. Admiral Robert Blake is said to have been born here in 1598. In four Bridgwater wards, social tenants occupy some 18% of homes and cohabiting couples about 15% of households, each higher than across the South West. For renters and couples newly sharing a home, a regular weekly outing of your own is the surest route to a local circle.
Terraced streets feel lonely on dark evenings if you are still new to them. The Blake Museum on Blake Street takes donations rather than tickets until it closes for the season on 7 November, the Cornhill Indoor Market keeps its High Street doors open from Monday right through to Saturday, and Trinity Sports and Leisure on Chilton Street runs a full pool programme. Bridgwater Town Council has invited volunteers for a Blake Gardens Heritage and Community Group, and no special skills are needed. Places to try:
