Fareham, a market town at the top of the harbour

Fareham sits at the head of Portsmouth Harbour, a market town recorded as Ferneham in the Domesday Book, with West Street as its main shopping street and Fareham Creek running down to the water. Just over 24% of central-ward residents are 65 or over, and around 41% of homes have no mortgage left to pay, more on both counts than the regional average. If your days have opened up after work or family, a regular daytime group is an easy way to fill them with people.

Retirement or an empty house can feel lonely after a long run of busy weekdays, and Fareham has plenty to fill the gap. The library timetable also includes a Scrabble club on Mondays, a monthly Conversation Cafe and a poetry group, the Sensory Garden of Reflection off Osborn Road is among the 2026 Green Flag winners, and Fareham Leisure Centre on Park Lane is run by Everyone Active. Westbury Manor Museum closed in November 2024. Some ideas:
