Lancaster runs on a Saturday morning

The Charter Market fills Market Square on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and The Dukes on Moor Lane runs a playreading club and a community chorus. Gofrendly helps Lancaster women meet up nearby.

How can graduates staying in Lancaster make friends?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, helps women in Lancaster discover who lives across town and message before meeting up. A Saturday browse at the Charter Market or a climb to the Ashton Memorial gives graduates staying on an easy first plan.

Lancaster, a city of students and settled streets

Lancaster grew around its castle, which stands on the site of Roman forts and saw the 1612 witch trials. In eight central wards, about one person in six is of student age, 18 to 24, and nearly a quarter of homes are private lets, both far above the North West, thanks to the university and the city’s colleges. That means plenty of people arrive each year, and some stay on after graduating and need a fresh circle once course mates move on.

Losing your course friends after graduation can feel lonely. The Central Library on Market Square is closed for restoration until spring 2027, with a temporary library at White Cross Business Park and community groups now meeting at St Thomas’ Church. Williamson Park, home to the Ashton Memorial and its new lift, gained a 2026 Green Flag, and Lancaster City Museum charges nothing to district residents. The Dukes also runs Prime Time for over-55s.
