Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, east of Manchester, where the Ashton, Peak Forest and Huddersfield Narrow canals join at Portland Basin. In its four town wards, social tenants occupy 27% of homes and under-16s nearly 22% of residents, both above the North West. For young families, the market, the library and the canal towpaths give easy, repeatable ways to bump into the same neighbours.
Life with small children can feel lonely if your old friends are miles away. Ashton has no leisure centre at present, since the Active Ashton pool closed in 2023 and was demolished in 2025, so swimmers use Hyde or Denton. Stamford Park on the Stalybridge border has a café, an aviary and a boating lake, and hosts Stamford Park parkrun. The Grade II Town Hall is closed for restoration until around 2030, so Portland Basin is the best place for a heritage outing. Ideas to try:
