Lowestoft is a seaside and fishing town in East Suffolk, home to Ness Point, the most easterly point in the UK, and to Oulton Broad at the edge of the Broads. In the six wards that cover the town, close to 25% of people are aged 65-plus and around 34% of households are single-person homes, both well beyond the regional shares. Whether you are retired or simply live alone, a regular weekly fixture makes it much easier to turn hellos into friendships, because the same faces keep turning up week after week.
If you live alone, winter by the sea can feel lonely, so a weekly group helps. Lowestoft has groups at the library on several weekdays, a seafront parkrun, Sparrow’s Nest park with its café and museums, and a theatre whose community groups include Next Stagers, a drama group for over-50s. From Easter to the end of October, Lowestoft Museum in Nicholas Everitt Park opens with no entry charge. Places to start:
