Gosforth keeps a busy diary

To make friends in Gosforth, start with the groups that already meet every week. Gosforth Library on Regent Farm Road runs a knit and crochet group on Wednesdays from 11am, and Gosforth Leisure Centre on the same road runs more than 40 studio classes every week. On Saturdays, Town Moor parkrun and Jesmond Dene parkrun are both a short trip south. On Gofrendly you can look for a Gosforth woman who fancies the same session.

On which days can I visit the library in Gosforth?

Gosforth Library on Regent Farm Road opens 10am to 6pm on Tuesdays, 10am to 2pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and 10am to 5pm on Fridays. It is closed on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, and the Regent Centre interchange is about four minutes away on foot.

Which parkruns are closest to Gosforth?

Town Moor parkrun starts about 2km south of Gosforth High Street, behind the Wylam Brewery, and is a single anti-clockwise loop of the moor. Jesmond Dene parkrun, a little further away, climbs 21 steps and a steep hill to Paddy Freeman’s Park before a big loop and a small loop there.

Can women in Gosforth find friends through an app?

Start with someone a few streets away. Gofrendly, the women-only friendship app, shows Gosforth profiles near you, and you can write first. A lap of Central Park before the High Street gets busy makes a low-key first plan for two people who have only just met.

Settled streets and new faces in Gosforth

Gosforth is a settled suburb. Owner-occupiers hold over three quarters of homes, more than 44% are owned outright, and married pairs raising dependants account for roughly a fifth of households, so give yourself a few months to settle in, and do not judge the place by its first quiet weeks. The first step is yours: pick one regular weekly group and stay with it until the faces there turn familiar to you.

Starting over among people with settled routines can be lonely for a season. Gosforth Central Park has a play area for younger children and seven entrances from the streets around it, and its tennis courts can be booked by the hour. Gosforth Leisure Centre offers lane swimming in its 25m pool, a learner pool for beginners, with sauna and steam rooms too, and Gosforth Civic Theatre on the same road runs as an arts venue and café. A few good places to begin:

1
Wednesday knit and crochet at Gosforth Library.
2
A booked game on the Central Park tennis courts.
3
Aqua aerobics or yoga at Gosforth Leisure Centre.
4
Town Moor parkrun on Saturday mornings.
5
Jesmond Dene parkrun through the wooded dene.
LOCAL TIP
Go to the same knit and crochet session for a month and you will head home with a new pattern and a few new numbers.
