Make Friends in Barry, from the Island promenade to Porthkerry

Barry brings needles and wool on Tuesdays

Knit and Natter at Barry Library in King Square, on Tuesday mornings with needles and wool provided, is a relaxed way to make friends in Barry, and the Shared Reading Group meets upstairs on Friday afternoons. On Saturdays Barry Island parkrun runs along the promenade and through the gardens towards Jackson’s Bay. Barry women can find a partner for either on Gofrendly.

Barry: a handful of local answers

Which clubs run at Barry Library?

Barry Library in King Square runs a Tuesday morning knitting group, an Adult Colouring Club and a Crochet Club on Thursdays, a Shared Reading Group and coffee morning on Fridays, a monthly Food Lovers Book Club and fortnightly board games on Saturdays for Barry residents.

Where does Barry Island parkrun go?

Barry Island parkrun is a two-lap out-and-back course that starts and finishes under the Eastern Shelter on the promenade, then runs through the gardens above it towards Jackson’s Bay. The run on 17 October 2026 drew 248 finishers and 24 volunteers in Barry.

What is Porthkerry Country Park in Barry?

Porthkerry Country Park is a wooded valley running down to the beach west of Barry, under the Porthkerry Viaduct, built in the 1890s and opened in 1900. It became a country park in 1976 and has a ranger service, and its toilets were refurbished in 2026.

Where do Barry parents meet other women?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, introduces Barry mums and other women to people close by, starting with a message. A Saturday parkrun on the Island, or a Porthkerry walk with the children, is a relaxed first outing that needs no babysitter at all.

Barry, a Vale of Glamorgan seaside town of families

In the eight Barry wards nearly 15% of homes are single-parent families and nearly a fifth of local people are aged 0–15, both higher than in Wales overall. School runs and seaside weekends fill the calendar quickly, so look for a weekly group with a fixed time that survives even a packed week, and treat it as an appointment with yourself.

Being the only grown-up at home can feel lonely by evening. Barry Leisure Centre on Greenwood Street offers a main pool, a 13-metre learner pool and a refurbished gym with group cycling and more than 60 classes a week, Porthkerry Country Park runs down a wooded valley to the beach under the Victorian viaduct, and the Memo Arts Centre on Gladstone Road has live shows and a cinema. Barry Island’s new beach showers and changing rooms opened in 2026, and the library’s Friday Shared Reading Group comes with free refreshments upstairs. Good first stops:
