Washington, a new town of villages

Washington is a new town in the City of Sunderland, built from the 1960s around a set of numbered villages and the older Washington Village, home to Washington Old Hall. Across its five wards, people aged 65 or over make up more than 22% of residents and social housing nearly 26% of homes, both above the regional levels. Because the town is made up of villages, joining a local group can be a good way to start, so it is worth finding one that suits you.

Once you have retired or the children have left home, a town you know well can still be lonely. Washington has an arts centre with choirs, dance and writing groups, a refurbished hub with a makers’ space, a leisure centre and Albany Park, where the Washington F Pit Museum reopens after refurbishment in summer 2027. Herrington Country Park, a short drive south, was awarded a Green Flag in July 2026 and hosts its own Saturday morning parkrun. Places to start:

1
Arts Centre Washington on Biddick Lane, with choirs, dance and writing groups.
2

3
Washington Leisure Centre: a 25-metre pool, a learner pool and two flumes.
4
