Kettering, in North Northamptonshire, gained a town council in 2021. Across its five wards, roughly 20% of people are 15 or younger and close to 23% of homes are let privately, both above the regional figures. That means plenty of families and renters, which makes the park, the market and the library natural places to meet. A friendly opening line or a smile at the playground or a market stall can easily lead to a first coffee, and then a second one a week later.
It can feel lonely in a new town, or once children become more independent. Kettering’s weekly fixtures help: the Saturday parkrun, three market days and a library back in its old building. The heritage site around the Alfred East Gallery and Manor House Museum is reopening this autumn, adding another place to explore with someone new on a quiet afternoon or a rainy weekend.
