Once friends settle down and weekends fill with family, being single in your 40s can mean your own plans take more organising. Caerphilly county borough spreads along several valleys, so a handful of regular places where you are known makes a real difference. Several of the places below are run by volunteers, so joining in is straightforward.
Sunday afternoons are when it can feel lonely, with everyone else apparently at a family table. Build your own rhythm instead: a Saturday 5k, a weekly art or craft session, and a volunteering shift at one of the small museums. Volunteers run the Aber Valley Heritage Museum in Senghenydd and the Risca Museum, and Parc Cwm Darran near Bargoed has a lakeside walk and a café for slow Sundays. If you want to make friends after 40 as a single woman, suggest the next plan yourself; plenty of people are glad to be asked. Go back a second time even if the first felt awkward. Places to start:
