Plenty of us in our forties have gone off late nights without wanting to give up evenings out altogether. What works is an activity with a fixed start and end time, a bit of effort and a bit of conversation, and home before ten. A women-only running club, a rowing course or a monthly WI meeting all fit, and each puts familiar faces around you week by week, which is a reliable way to make friends after 40.
Ten Burton upon Trent wards counted over 9,100 forty-somethings in 2021, a 12% share identical to the regional one. Midweek can feel lonely if friends are either partying or hibernating, so a fixed evening helps, ideally the same one each week. Burton and South Derbyshire College offers part-time courses such as ceramics, jewellery making, photography and Japanese, and Burton Tennis and Squash Club, owned by its members, offers adult coaching.
