Plymouth’s population in their 40s rose by about 5% from 2021 to 2025, outpacing the wider South West. Whether you arrived for work or are changing direction in a city you already know well, a change of job tends to change your social life too: old colleagues fade, and the new ones may not become friends. Now is the time to make friends after 40 through a habit you choose yourself, outside the hours you are paid for.
The first months in a new role can be lonely, so give your week a fixed point outside it. Lengths at the Life Centre, a Saturday parkrun or a weekly choir mean you see familiar faces, whether you are 42 or 48. Plymouth’s Natural Grid volunteering takes people out with National Trust rangers, and On Course South West runs daytime and evening adult courses for anyone retraining or trying a new field.
