Harrogate meets over coffee at its library

Coffee and Conversation in the café area of Harrogate Library on Victoria Avenue is a relaxed way to make friends in Harrogate, and the library also hosts a craft group, a games group and three monthly reading groups. On Saturdays Harrogate parkrun crosses The Stray, half on grass and half on tarmac, within easy reach of the shops. Harrogate women who meet on Gofrendly can arrange to go along together.

Harrogate in brief: questions and answers

What can you do in Valley Gardens, Harrogate?

Valley Gardens covers about 17 acres beside the Pinewoods, with the Sun Pavilion and colonnades, the Magnesia Well café, a children’s boating pool and a playground. In summer, bands play there on Sunday afternoons, an outing in Harrogate that costs nothing to share with someone new.

When is the Harrogate farmers’ market?

The Harrogate farmers’ market sets up on Cambridge Street on the second Thursday of each month, and the Harrogate BID Makers Market follows on the third Sunday, 10am until 4pm, bringing local crafts, art and food. Going to both gives you two fixed dates a month to see familiar faces.

Where is the main pool in Harrogate?

Harrogate Leisure and Wellbeing Hub, the former Harrogate Hydro on Jenny Field Drive, offers eight 25-metre lanes, a gym, sauna and steam room, all run by Active North Yorkshire. Booking the same lane session every week soon has you nodding to fellow Harrogate swimmers.

Can Harrogate women meet each other through an app?

Gofrendly is a women-only friendship app that lets Harrogate women browse nearby members, with profiles to read and messages to send before any plans are made. A walk across The Stray or a pot of tea in Valley Gardens makes a calm first meeting for two near-strangers.

Harrogate, a spa town where people settle

Across the nine wards that make up the town, about 68 homes in every 100 belong to whoever lives there and only one in ten is social housing, far under the Yorkshire rate. Where so many have put down roots, circles can feel closed at first, so it pays to treat friendship as a slow build: the same class, the same table, the same Saturday, until the faces start to expect you.

Being lonely in a pretty town is no less real for the view. The Mercer Art Gallery, in the Promenade Rooms of 1806, costs nothing to visit, Valley Gardens has the Magnesia Well café and Sunday band concerts in summer, and the Makers Market fills Cambridge Street on the third Sunday of each month. The Leisure and Wellbeing Hub on Jenny Field Drive, the former Hydro, has eight swimming lanes, and Harrogate Theatre on Oxford Street adds comedy, drama and pantomime through the winter. Places to begin:

1
Harrogate Library on Victoria Avenue and its café corner.
2
Valley Gardens, with the Magnesia Well café.
3
The Stray, home of Harrogate parkrun.
4
The Mercer Art Gallery, free in the old Promenade Rooms.
5
The Makers Market on Cambridge Street, third Sundays.
LOCAL TIP
Take a seat at Coffee and Conversation two weeks running and someone may well save you a chair.
