Make Friends in Beverley, on the Westwood

Cattle still graze Beverley Westwood, common land since 1380, and Beverley has a markedly older population than the region.

Beverley runs among the cattle

Beverley Westwood parkrun, two laps of historic pasture where cattle graze, is an unusual way to make friends in Beverley, and it starts under a kilometre from the centre every Saturday. The Champney Treasure House holds the library, the art gallery and a café, and the Saturday market fills the town’s market square. Gofrendly helps Beverley women find a walking partner for the Westwood.

Beverley: the Westwood, parkrun and Treasure House

What is Beverley Westwood?

Beverley Westwood is common land given to the people of Beverley in 1380 and still grazed by cattle under a committee of pasture masters. The Black Mill stands on its highest point, the racecourse is on its north side, and Burton Bushes woodland and the Newbegin Pits dell make good walks.

Where does Beverley Westwood parkrun start?

Beverley Westwood parkrun starts and finishes on an open part of the Westwood where Westwood Road meets Walkington Road, under a kilometre from Beverley town centre. It is two anticlockwise laps on undulating pasture along an old drove way, and more than 250 people finished one recent week.

What is in the Treasure House in Beverley?

The Champney Treasure House on Champney Road holds Beverley Library, the reference library, the art gallery and council services. Its £3.3m transformation in 2024 added gardens with seating, a Changing Places toilet and a café, so it is a handy Beverley meeting point.

Beverley women: how to widen your circle?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, lets Beverley women discover others nearby, from Molescroft to Woodmansey, and swap a handful of messages before meeting. A stroll on the Westwood or lunch in the Treasure House café is an easy first meeting.

Beverley, an East Riding market town for later life

Beverley is the East Riding’s market town, with the Westwood on its edge, given to the townspeople in 1380 and still grazed under the town’s pasture masters. Across its two central wards a quarter of people are at least 65 and 41% of households own outright, both clearly ahead of Yorkshire and the Humber. After retiring here, or once the family has moved on, the week can feel quieter than you expected.

A quiet week can turn lonely, and Beverley has gentle ways to fill it. The Treasure House on Champney Road had a £3.3m transformation in 2024, with a better library, an art gallery, gardens with seating and a café, East Riding Leisure Beverley at Flemingate has pools and an outdoor gym, and the Westwood offers walks past the Black Mill, the racecourse and Burton Bushes woodland. The Saturday market brings stalls to the town’s main square too. Places to begin:
