Gloucester sits beside the Severn, and today its cathedral, docks and the four Gate Streets sit close together in a compact centre. Across the city, children under 16 are about 19% of residents and lone parents head around 11% of households, each a notch above the South West averages. If you are fitting friendships round school runs or shift work, an evening or Saturday you keep for yourself gives new friendships a fair chance.
Evenings spent indoors can make even a busy cathedral city feel lonely. The library moved into the University of Gloucestershire’s City Campus in October 2025 with a single open-plan floor and a workshop space called the Lab, and GL1 Leisure Centre on Bruton Way is starting an upgrade that runs to autumn 2027. Robinswood Hill rises to 198 metres, with a café and the Wildlife Trust’s base. Four Gloucester parks won Green Flags in July 2026. Places to begin:
