Our Dorset page uses the Dorset Council area, everything outside the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation: Dorchester, Weymouth, Portland, Bridport, Lyme Regis, Sherborne, Blandford, Wimborne, Swanage and Gillingham. Bournemouth has its own page and sits outside the figures. Towns here tend to be small and spread out, so most friendships here start with whatever is closest. A class at the village hall or a walk from your own front door is a reasonable place to begin.
Over three in ten residents are 65 or older, far above the South West average, and in more than one in six homes a person aged 66-plus lives alone. A move to the coast, a bereavement or a change in work can leave you lonely for a while, even somewhere friendly. A fixed weekly plan helps, whether a walking group, a community choir, a bowls or tennis club, or a volunteer shift. Somewhere to start, coast and country:
