Make Friends in Dover, under the white cliffs

Almost a third of Dover households are private tenants, far above the regional rate, so other recent arrivals may live on your street.

Dover remembers its Channel swimmers

Free entry to Dover Museum on Market Square makes it an easy place to make friends in Dover, open Monday to Saturday with displays on Channel swimming and the Bronze Age Boat. Dover Waterfront parkrun runs along the seafront on Saturday mornings, and Kearsney Abbey on the edge of town has a café. Gofrendly brings Dover women together locally, too.

Is Dover Museum free?

Yes, admission to Dover Museum on Market Square costs nothing. From October to March its doors are open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm, without Sunday opening, and current displays include a Christian Dior gown and the Bronze Age Boat, good talking points for two.

What is Kearsney Abbey near Dover?

Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens are historic parks in the Alkham Valley on the north-west edge of Dover, open all year, and their café is on temporary hours of 10am to 4pm. The parks hold a 2026 Green Flag and offer volunteering.

Is Dover Castle open in winter?

Dover Castle, run by English Heritage, is open daily from 10am to 5pm, with half-term Halloween activities and festive weekends from 5 to 20 December 2026. The Operation Dynamo tunnels are closed for maintenance, but the Underground Hospital in Dover is open.

New to Dover: where do I start making friends?

Gofrendly, a women-only friendship app, helps women who have recently arrived in Dover discover others living nearby and get talking by message. A walk along the seafront or a visit to the museum on Market Square makes a relaxed first plan.

Dover, a port town of renters and families

Dover is the port at the foot of the white cliffs, watched over by Dover Castle and Henry II’s Great Tower. In the five town wards, close to 31% of households are private tenants and nearly 10% are lone parents raising dependent children, well above regional figures. With so many residents renting or bringing up children by themselves, your neighbours could well be looking for company too, so it is always worth saying hello.

Moving to a busy port can be lonely in the first months. Dover Museum marks a century since Gertrude Ederle’s 1926 Channel swim and tells the story of Channel swimming since Captain Webb, and its Roman Painted House on New Street closes for the winter after 31 October. Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens, just outside the town, hold a 2026 Green Flag and welcome volunteers, with a café on shorter hours for now. Places to begin:

1
Dover Museum on Market Square, free to visit.
2
Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens, with a café.
3
The seafront, home of Dover Waterfront parkrun.
4
Dover Castle, with its Great Tower and wartime tunnels.
5
The Roman Painted House on New Street, open in season.
LOCAL TIP
Meet a neighbour at the museum and walk down to the seafront.
