Islington is compact and crowded, stretching from Clerkenwell and Angel up to Archway. Over a quarter of people living here are 25 to 34, more than a third of households are one person, and two in five households rent from the council or a housing association, often staying on the same estate or street for years. That mix of newcomers and long-term neighbours is useful: invite newcomers along to things, and ask long-time neighbours which tenants’ groups, clubs and choirs are worth joining, because they will often know.
Because everything is close, the trick is narrowing down rather than travelling. Pick the high street nearest your front door, whether Upper Street, Holloway Road or the area around Archway, and search out whatever meets weekly.
